Piercings and Teenagers

"To let or not to let" is the question many parents have about their teens getting piercings, especially facial ones. My answer is rather simple but with conditions - have a thorough discussion about aftercare, consequences and reasons why. And if their reasoning seems strong I say - let them have it. If you not sure about physiological side of the piercing have a chat with a piercer prior a conversation with your teen, some piercings have age restrictions for a reason and it is better that you and your child know all about it.

The concequences that many parents would face if they choose not to let their teens get piercings they want is - at least 50% of teens will get the piercing either way. The difference is though the environment and safety of how, where and by whom they'll get pierced. Some will do it themselves, some will get it done by willing friends, some by "dodgy" piercers in the back alleyway... I know because I was one of those teens that didn't take no for an answer and got it pierced myself. Lucky enough there was no complications, but there could have been.. Least scary unsafe piercing complications are infections, allergic reactions and scars, but it could be a lot worse - nerve injury, infections that develop into cepsis; hepatitis... just a few to mention.

If you don't want your teen to get pierced just yet - have an open conversation with them and express your concerns and reasons, try to find a common ground. I can assure you they will 100% will appreciate it rather than just a cold NO.

To sum up: always choose a reputable professional piercer and salon that has good reviews, that uses good quality jewellery. Ask the piercer all the questions you can think of.

Make sure to have a proper conversation with your teenager about all "ins and outs" of the piercings.

Make sure your teen is using aftercare correctly as recommended as complications are still available even if piercing is done in the most prestigious piercing salon but aftercare is not followed.

Piercings are fun way of expressing yourself and even better if they are done the right way!
